Inside the sanctuary of Amenhotep the Third the sacred bark of Amun-Re was placed after it had been brought from Karnak. During the time of Alexander the Great, the four columns that supported the roof were removed and the present chapel was built.

The chapel was decorated inside and outside with depictions of Alexander worshiping various Egyptian deities.

The walls around the chapel still mostly show Amenhotep the Third worshiping the Theban deities. However, in some cases Amenhotep has been replaced by Alexander.
