This bottom of a vessel is made of Mamluk pottery. It is painted in a blue and white coating.
The basic ornamentation of the surface is an image of a sizable bird looking backward. A blue bundle of flowers surrounds the bird in all directions. The high temperature of the furnace in which the vessel was fired caused the coating to be accidentally mixed with a blue color.
It possibly was made in Cairo, because it is unlikely the defective vessel would have been imported. The middle of the bottom is signed by the potter, Gheiby. |
