This manuscript from the book of Al-Asbab Wa al-Alamat by Naguib al-Din al-Samarqandi who died in 619 AH (1222 AD) is written with black ink, and the names with red ink. It classifies what is known in modern medicine as nutrition as well as substitution medicine. The author talks about different food and beverages, their natural characteristics, and what man can profit from to heal ailments. He also uses it as an ecological method, similar to tropical medicine at the present time. He uses effective food in some remedies; for example, he says that adding such and such to some plant would be more effective in hot countries and seasons.
