Imhotep was the architect and superintendent of works for the great funerary complex of Djoser.

This statue represents Imhotep wearing a long kilt and a necklace and sitting on a high openwork seat with his feet on a footrest; he is holding a papyrus adorned with hieroglyphic inscriptions.

He was usually depicted in this attitude because he was considered the patron of writing and science and was recognized in literature as one of the great 'wise men' of the past.
