Al-Tanbugha bin Abdallah Al-Mardani was one of the Mamluks of Sultan Al-Nasir Mohammad Ibn Qala'un. Sultan Al-Nasir treated him well and appointed him as Cupbearer and then as head of the Tablakhana, or military band, within a short period. Sultan Al-Nasir, then, made him Amir of a Hundred and later a Commander of a Thousand. He gave Al-Mardani his daughter's hand in marriage.
Upon the death of Sultan Al-Nasir, he was succeeded by his son Sultan Al-Mansur Abu Bakr who imprisoned Al-Mardani in AH 743 (AD 1341).
However, when Sultan Abu Bakr was overthrown by his brother, Sultan Al-Ashraf Kujuk, Al-Mardani was released. He lived for a short time in Aleppo but was taken ill and died.
He was described as being a tall, handsome young man who was both generous and kind. |
