Kufi

Arabic script used extensively in early Islamic times which has specific proportional measurements, along with pronounced angularity and squareness; the name comes from the Iraqi city of Kufa.

The linen fragment has two bands of printed floral decorations with animals interspersed, around which are three bands with Kufic inscriptions that invoke a blessing.

The upper band contains a rinceau, which is a scrolling plant pattern containing floral leaves which are repeated, and two eagles spreading their wings. One eagle is attacking a goose which gave its head to him and the other is attacking a gazelle.

The lower band depicts an eagle attacking a rabbit and a lion attacking a beast. The area between the two bands consists of blue and black floral decorations on a gilded background.
