Glossary

diadem

a crown worn as a sign of royalty

Serapeum

This term was applied to two places. The first is at Saqqara; and it refers to the underground galleries which contained the burial chambers of the Apis bulls. The second place is at Alexandria where there has been a temple from Greco-Roman times dedicated to the cult of the god Serapis or the Apis Bull in those times.

This is a limestone head of Queen Berenice the Second, the wife of Ptolemy the Third. The hair is styled in the form of a diadem surrounding the head. The protruding eyes gaze directly forward and the face expresses a mood of sadness.

The queen played an important part in supporting her husband in ruling the country. They jointly founded the Serapeum in Alexandria, as well as temples in the southern part of the country, such as the temple at Edfu.
