Household Miniatures

The uninscribed rock-cut tomb of the chancellor Meketre, from the Eleventh Dynasty, was excavated in AD 1919-1920 near the funerary complex of Montuhotep the Second at Deir el-Bahari.

Exquisite wooden models of the chancellor's household were made in miniature to depict his different workshops, his estate and garden, and his ships and fishing boats.

These models were placed in the shaft of the tomb to serve the deceased in the afterlife.

The collection was divided between the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
