The Ptolemies were Egyptianized from the reign of Ptolemy the Fourth, and were represented as pharaohs. Nevertheless, the style at that period was not as beautiful as earlier Pharaonic art.
This head, found in Abu Qir Bay, shows a king wearing the royal headdress called nemes, dominated by the sacred cobra. The eyelids and eyebrows are carved in relief. The eyes are wide open and the ears are exposed by the headdress. |
