This box is for keeping a scale and weights. It is ornamented with a cross and a Greek inscription. The box contains a sliding rule of two levels, carved and divided to contain balances. The beam and the pans of the scale are visible on two levels.
The box is fastened with a movable lock that ends in a latch. On the lock there is an inscribed cross with a Greek inscription above it that reads "With God's grace the scales inside are of the Byzantine epoch." These accurate scales were usually purchased from a jeweler and approved by the coin inspector.
The words "God's grace" on the box are a warranty that the scales are accurate and have been approved by the government.
