This silver communion cup has a long stem resting on a circular foot. It is used for the communion wine during the service of Holy Mass. The chalice is kept in a wooden box called the Ark, which is placed on the altar.

The service vessels, which are the chalice, the spoon, and the paten, or plate to hold communion hosts, are often made of silver or gold.
