The icon depicts the Holy Family in Egypt. In the background there are hills and mountains, a building with towers, trees and palms. The Holy Virgin is sitting on a horse, and her head is surrounded by an aureole.

Saint Joseph the Carpenter, leader of the journey, holds his staff in his right hand and carries the Infant Jesus on his shoulder. Jesus is turning his head toward the Holy Virgin. All three figures have a halo around their heads. Written at the top of the icon is a sentence in Arabic that reads, "The Virgin is returning to Egypt."

Another phrase in Arabic beneath the horse says, "Remember, O Lord, Him who labored for the Kingdom of Heaven."
